Drinking games, sex talk and jigsaws - this is life in a unique Dutch retirement home. Young and old live side-by-side sharing the joys of life, and the sadness of death, together. “You have to try to throw a white ping pong ball into the beer, and then you have to drink it,” Annie Middelburg explains about the ‘beer pong’ drinking game she’s just learnt. She’s 84… but she says that things are lot more fun when she’s spending time with youngsters like 22-year-old Jurrien Mentink. He’s one of six students who live rent free at the Humanitas aged care home in Deventer near Amsterdam. In return, they agree to spend at least 30 hours a month socialising with the older residents. “Students struggle to find housing in the Netherlands, especially in big cities,” Jurrien tells Aaron Lewis on T...

He’s one of six students who live rent free at the Humanitas aged care home in Deventer near Amsterdam. In return, they agree to spend at least 30 hours a month socialising with the older residents. “Students struggle to find housing in the Netherlands, especially in big cities,” Jurrien tells Aaron Lewis on Tuesday’s Dateline. “I pay nothing to live here.” And it’s the housing crisis that prompted Humanitas to come up with this cheap way of providing better care, and company, for their residents. “I think that the students influence the whole tone of the conversation here,” CEO Gea Sijpkes explains on the thinking behind her idea. “So that it’s not only about death, sickness and old age, but also about youth, about parties, about girlfriends.” In fact, a lot of the talk here revolves around sex! “They sometimes like to flirt with a young guy,” student Jordi Pronk tells Aaron. “You pass by and they whistle or wink at you or they give you a little slap on the behind.” But inevitably these are friendships that can quite suddenly come to an end, as young and old face the final moments of life together. “She wished me a good life, to get the most out of it,” Jurrien says of his 105-year-old neighbour shortly before she passed away. “It’s a nice feeling to help them find their final moments of happiness.” See the story on Tuesday's Dateline at 9.30pm on SBS:

In his funny and touching talk, Jurriën Mentink will describe the initiative in Deventer and the results of a simple experiment gone right. Jurriën Mentink, a student of Urban Design at the Saxion University of Applied Sciences, is one of a handful of students who live at the Humanitas Residential and Care Center, a long-term aged care facility in Deventer, the Netherlands. He lives rent-free in exchange for 30 hours of volunteer work per month, during which he helps the elderly residents in various activities, from teaching them computer skills, to having meals and meaningful conversations together, that ultimately enriches all their lives. Emil, aged 24 and a kindergarten teacher, struggled to find housing because of the high cost of rent and scarce availability. "Basically, I was homeless; not on the street, but homeless," said Emil. According to The Global Property Guide, Helsinki is the 16th most expensive city in the world to rent an apartment - even more expensive than New York. Emil and Jonatan, who is aged 19 and a pastry chef student, were both among 300 applicants that applied for a new housing program called "A Home That Fits," which provides cheap housing for young people under 25 years old in a senior's home for a year. Each young resident must spend at least three to five hours in the company of the elders each week, socializing and conversing. It is not the first program of its kind. In the Netherlands, a program offers free accommodation to college students in order to encourage social interaction with elders. With so many cities across the globe facing an increase in demand, the project may be replicated further. So far for Helsinki's program, the project has been off to a successful start, and Emil and Jonatan are thoroughly enjoying their new homes and new neighbors. "Because I work with children, and I have friends that are my age and then with elderly, I get to basically see the whole spectrum of ages in Finland," said Emil. "Through that, I can understand the Finnish culture better and just life, I guess. It's cool that I can get to know people of all ages."

While there has been an ongoing debate for decades in the United States and its European counterparts about different approaches to health care, there is one particular area where the Europeans, or in this case, the Dutch, wins hands down, and that is their innovative approach to taking care of their citizens with dementia. That's the conclusion of Irma Toce, the C.E.O. of the Londonderry on the Tred Avon retirement community in Easton, based on her personal experience as an expatriate from Holland whose grandmother was a victim of dementia in the 1970s. From those early days to the present, Irma has watched with amazement as the Netherlands has moved to the forefront of innovative care for those suffering from acute memory loss. Even though Toce's day-to-day responsibilities at Londonderry rarely involves issues related to dementia, she has spent a considerable amount of her career studying the condition, and has joined others in attempting to end the crippling stigma that comes with it. In her frequent trips back to Holland to visit family, she has also kept up with her former country's latest developments in care. Perhaps the most exciting of these for Irma has been the creation of "dementia villages" in Holland. Housing approximately 200 residents each, these heavily secured facilities entirely replicate the essential elements of a community, including independent living for residents, coffee cafes, restaurants, art galleries, gift shops, bars and a grocery store all within a controlled safe zone. Those within the village can continue to maintain their lifelong habits of shopping or meeting friends for drinks without the risk of getting lost or harming themselves. In her first Spy interview, Irma talks about her most recent visit to a dementia village and the extraordinary benefits its residents receive from this new model of care. Research data confirms that those placed in these facilities experience need far less medication, live much longer, and are considerably "happier" than those in a traditional nursing home setting. With those facts in hand, Irma continues to fight her campaign for similar approaches in this country.

At IntoConnection we always love win-win situations. Therefore we could not let this Dutch company pass our radar. Mantelaar is a start-up business that brings together a network of medicine students and elderly. In The Netherlands there are many lonely seniors who may not always get the care they deserve. There are not enough skilled caregivers to distribute their attention evenly. The innovators behind Mantelaar found a way to create a better and more devoted caregiving system by matching elderly with medicine students. The fundraising campaign for which they received 336% of the needed investments, proves that many believe in this innovative caregiving system. So what do they do? Mantelaar has a network of capable and motivated students, who study medicine or a comparable study. The students get to practice their knowledge in real life situations. They help elderly people with daily tasks, such as cooking and cleaning, but also take them out for a stroll or a visit to the museum. The involved seniors enjoy the extra attention from these devoted youngsters a lot! Like we said: a win-win situation.
